Map Critique

The foundations of clear and concise map making are important and should be emphasized whenever creating a map.  In this module, the lecture material stressed the dos and don'ts of spatially representing information accurately.  The "don't lie with your map" premise is more crucial than ever today with the spread of disinformation.  Our task was to compare two maps; one well designed, and one poorly designed.

For my well designed map, I found a fantastic map representing the fictional realm of Westeros from the Game of Thrones storyline.  I feel the cartographer really captured the essence of the saga and it's place in time through a well thought out design of the map.  The semi-ordinate neatline and the beige margin add to the illusion of an old map, minus the sea creature sticking out of the ocean.

As for the poorly designed map, I liked the idea of the subject, but the execution was off.  I would have put less information on the map and made either a series of maps or an interactive WebApp.  All of the text on the map was too small to read as a result of the voluminous amount of words.  I did enjoy the overlays, but perhaps softer or slightly transparent colors for the segmented areas would be more aesthetically appealing.
